Lyons - Next best ... about 30 mins further than Grenoble.

Drive

We love to drive because it avoids the "sheep" mentality. Calais to Les2Alpes is about 12 hours non-stop. Usually we take 8 days and stay overnight in Grenoble. Then we can be in the mountains first thing on Saturday to get in a full day of skiing. http://www.eurotunnel.com

Train

I have never done it - but the TGV is probably a good and relaxing option. Waterloo to Gare de Nord, taxi to Gare de Lyons and TGV direct Paris to Grenoble in under 3 hours. Then transfer to Les 2 Alpes. Here is http://www.eurostar.com for prices, etc.
